Oral Finale
IB Learner Characteristic: Knowledgeable The final French oral was probably the scariest part of this whole subject and one which at some point I thought I would fail. In the end, I passed it with flying colours and surprised even myself with my abilities and my knowledge in the subject. I believe this evidence fits into the knowledgeable learner characteristic perfectly, as this one assessment has shown all of my learning, knowledge and progress in the subject of French Ab Initio. This oral shows that I went from not knowing how to speak French only two years ago, to actually being able to hold a conversation and describe an image with a complex situation and a theme of global importance. This final oral made me feel completely satisfied and extremely happy, as well as very proud of myself. I never thought I would finish with such a great result from my oral, and most importantly, I never thought I would be able to speak French with such fluency and with a fairly decent pronunciation as well. I obviously felt very nervous at the beginning, but as I started gaining traction I began to feel more confident and relaxed. I believe that in the future, I will be able to look back at this subject and this result and remember that I am capable of learning anything with enough effort, and hopefully my knowledge of the French language and culture will also serve me good in the future, be it for business or simply for a nice and relaxing vacation. |
Présentation Orale
IB Learner Characteristic: Communicator This was the first presentation that was assigned to us in this subject, and it is a huge contrast to what I have been able to accomplish towards the end of the year. Nevertheless, I see it as my first step with French. I think this presentation fits into the communicator learner characteristic because I was forced to communicate in a new language that I barely spoke or understood, and even with that huge limitation, I was able to lay out some facts about myself. Apart from this, one could say that everything within a foreign language fits into this communicator skill, and having to communicate non-verbally and with pictures makes the experience easier for all of us who, at the time, were not well versed in French at all. The largest challenge with this presentation was, as I said before, the massive language barrier of trying to explain myself in a language that I could barely speak or understand. On top of this, my classmates to whom I was presenting had the same knowledge of French as I had, so it was like a mute and a deaf person trying to talk to each other. This is the explanation for why there is only photos in this presentation, as those are easier to understand. I remember feeling quite stressed out and uncomfortable trying to explain myself in French, but in the end this is what led me to now having certain fluency in the language. I think stepping out of my comfort zone and forcing myself to try and understand or speak was very helpful for my progress in this class. |

Reportage Touristique
IB Learner Characteristic: Risk-taker
This was a project that I enjoyed very much, I could probably say that this was my favorite project for this subject. We were tasked with making a tourism guide or report, and we decided to make something out of the ordinary that would differ from just the classic video with photos and a narration.
This project fits into the risk-taker learner characteristic because of the risk we took by making this video in this specific way. Instead of just reading off a paper into a microphone, we decided to go outside, learn our lines and record the videos by ourselves. Another risk that we took, even though it was a small one, was to go into a public place during the pandemic. We obviously took good care of ourselves, but the risk is always there. Finally we risked going right into the center of the city on a Sunday. This could have meant us getting stuck in endless traffic because of a protest and simply not being able to record the video, at least in the way that we intended it. Thankfully, it all came out fine and there was no protest that day.
While this was a risk, I remember feeling very good about our final product, as it was very original, fun and interesting. Our language was also quite good considering we were not reading most of what we were saying. I also remember having a lot of fun filming this video, as I went out with a friend and drove all around the city, with some great weather and some good music.
